Success stories Finding Solo: A new chapter after heartbreak

11th July 2025

Millie Harp and Solo Saxophone

After losing my heart horse last November, I began searching for a new best friend. A recommendation led me to SB Racehorse Rehoming, where I saw some promising mares, but none felt right.

Then they brought out Solo Saxophone, a 10-year-old gelding. Despite usually preferring mares, I instantly knew he was the one, and we brought him home in January.

Looking into Solo’s background, I learned his sire was Frankel and grandsire Galileo. Solo had a successful racing career with 11 wins from 47 starts and was the first of Frankel’s offspring to win over hurdles.

Solo’s true personality emerged at home. He found the smaller yard stressful and needed to see other horses constantly — something I soon learned was typical for an ex-racehorse.

Although riding started well, his napping knocked my confidence. With expert help from Steph Cole, who taught me how to build his trust, things changed dramatically. We now have weekly flatwork and jumping lessons at a local school, and I’m aiming to compete in low-level showjumping this year.

Steph also encouraged me to try endurance riding. So, I signed up for a competition membership and entered my first 42km novice endurance ride at Cerne Giant. Solo and I finished with a Grade 2 and won the performance formula! It was a fantastic experience — well organised and welcoming, and Solo was calm and confident throughout.

I never expected to enjoy endurance, but it’s affordable and accessible, and Solo loved it too.

I’m so grateful to have Solo and to my parents for their support — especially my mum, who lent me the money to buy him and helps with transport. This journey has been incredible, and I’m excited for what’s next.
