Darcy’s story: from “difficult” to dream horse
When eight-year-old Darcy arrived with Spiteri Retraining, in April through our Vulnerable Horse Scheme, she was days away from being put to sleep.
She had been bought for a 12-year-old, in a home inexperienced with Thoroughbreds. She was quickly labelled as difficult as the family struggled to cope with her needs. It was a heartbreaking case of a horse that had been placed in the wrong situation.
As a last resort, her owners contacted RoR. Thanks to quick action and collaboration between RoR and Spiteri Retraining, Darcy was moved the same day and given a second chance.
What we found
Despite the worrying reports, Darcy arrived calm and cooperative, although her feet were in a poor state, and she had a persistent dry cough. She hadn’t been shod in months and was visibly uncomfortable, but there was no aggression. Just a confused mare who’d been failed by her circumstances.
With expert care, proper shoeing, and time under saddle, Darcy started to flourish.
The transformation
Over the following weeks, Darcy proved herself to be a kind, capable, and incredibly talented horse:
- Hacked out confidently, alone and in company - even past pigs, peacocks, and geese!
- Showed serious talent over fences in jumping and cross-country clinics.
- Travelled beautifully to beach rides and pole work sessions.
Darcy caught the eye (and heart!) of an experienced rider who has now taken her on after a successful trial.
Darcy’s story is one of hope - and a reminder that with the right support, even the most vulnerable horses can thrive.
