Welfare support for ex-racehorses
At RoR, we are dedicated to ensuring every retired racehorse has a dignified and fulfilling life after their racing career ends.
Whether you’re an owner, trainer, or simply concerned about a horse, we offer practical advice, dedicated support, and a national safety net for former racehorses in need.
Racing is the only equestrian discipline to provide a formal, structured safety net for its former athletes.
How we can help
We understand that every horse’s journey is different. That’s why our welfare support is tailored to different situations:
For racehorse owners and trainers
Are you preparing to retire a horse from racing or want to know more about the about retraining and rehoming process? Or do you have concerns about your horse’s suitability for retraining once they have retired from racing? We are here to guide you.
For owners of former racehorses
Are you facing a personal or financial situation that’s affecting your horse’s care? We offer support to help you through difficult times.
Our welfare programmes
We provide three main welfare support schemes for former racehorses at any stage of their post racing life:
- Retraining Assessment Programme (RAP)
Support for horses who have recently retired from racing — particularly those who may not be immediately suited to retraining. We help identify the next steps. - Vulnerable Horse Scheme (VHS)
Help for Thoroughbreds facing an uncertain future due to health issues or changes in their owner’s circumstances. - Emergency Relief for Thoroughbreds
If a Thoroughbred bred for racing is in urgent need of care or rehoming, this fund allows us to facilitate emergency funding for the welfare of the horse.
End of life and euthanasia
At RoR, we understand that the most compassionate outcome for some ex racehorses may be euthanasia. While this is never an easy decision, our priority is always the horse’s welfare and dignity. We provide guidance and support for owners facing this difficult decision.
To find out more view our euthanasia policy or for confidential advice, please contact our welfare team.
