blog Sourcing an ex-racehorse: why a charity partner could be your best route

13th October 2025

When it comes to sourcing an ex-racehorse, many find new homes through word of mouth — perhaps via a member of staff at the racing yard, or through their current owner helping them transition by placing them with a professional retrainer. For some, this may lead to a life as a competition horse, a companion, or simply a leisure horse.

However, while these routes can work well, one of the most secure and structured ways to source an ex-racehorse is through an established equine charity. Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) works closely with a network of trusted partner charities across the country to ensure horses receive the very best welfare care, while also giving prospective loaners the best opportunity to be matched with a horse that truly suits their lifestyle, riding ability and aspirations.

Rehoming through a charity

Every horse rehomed through a charity undergoes a thorough physical, temperamental and ridden assessment. This allows the centre to understand the horse’s temperament, physical abilities, and individual needs. With this insight, they can carefully match each horse with the most suitable rider or home. The process is designed to ensure a long-term, positive outcome for both horse and human.

It’s common to make more than one visit to meet a potential horse. This not only gives you time to build confidence and connection but also ensures the horse is the right fit for your goals — whether that’s low-level competition, hacking, or simply enjoying time with your new equine partner.

Importantly, rehoming from a charitable partner means you have ongoing support in your journey with your new equine partner, from advice and guidance on feeding and daily management to being on hand should you hit a bump in the road. This support network is designed to ensure a successful lifetime partnership for you and your Thoroughbred.

Agreements and support when rehoming through a charity

Whilst some may wish to own their horse outright, the charities will lease or loan the horse to safeguard its wellbeing for life, this ensures the horse always has a secure future, regardless of changes in your circumstances. You’ll be asked to sign a loan agreement, and you will be required to make a donation to support their ongoing welfare work.

This structure provides long-term stability for the horse and reassurance for you, knowing that the charity remains a source of advice and support throughout your loan.
